Your support makes a difference
The GL Foundation relies on the generosity of private donations to carry out our two-fold mission of supporting the patients & families dealing with pediatric glaucoma and their healthcare providers. With your donation, our work fills in the gaps of transportation, housing, medicines, glasses and costs of surgery that families are faced with and also supports scientists on the forefront of advancing the treatment of pediatric glaucoma around the world.

In 2011, the GL Foundation, along with other supporters, helped establish the Childhood Glaucoma Research Network (CGRN) to facilitate collaboration between a handful of specialists. Today it has grown to more than 400 researchers and surgeons in 55 nations around the globe all focused on accelerating care for this disorder. With this support, CGRN members are able to write the textbooks, lecture around the world, improve surgical techniques, standardize treatment patterns, and teach others. Members publish research on a variety of topics in the field from rates and types of the disorder, to genetic identifiers, regional variations, or outcomes from using a particular type of drainage device or surgical procedure. This collaboration, research, and teaching of others, deepens our understanding of pediatric glaucoma and improves outcomes for our patients.

Did you know most visual impairment in children is avoidable? With the help of GL Foundation and others donors, The Pediatric Preventable Blindness Initiative (PPB) was founded in 2018 with the goal of addressing a common problem found in children with eye abnormalities: kids cannot report symptoms. Early onset ocular problems can only be found through vision screening. Diagnosis at school age is often too late and leads to adverse outcomes in child development and education, or worse, a condition that can become too advanced for treatment. Dr. Grajewski developed a simple solution - vision screenings during vaccination appointments and local health centers. These screenings add only seconds to a well visit but can change the direction of child's life.
We have had very positive findings in Suriname and Barbados as we build the model with our partners in the Caribbean and the University of the West Indies. Leaders in US vision screening along with ophthalmologists from around the world and experts in public health and policy who are participating on the initiative agree that early prevention is the only viable solution when faced with the challenges of growing populations, an increase in eye disorders, and limited funding for increasing the amount of trained ophthalmologists.
