Disclaimer - Grajewski/Lyra Foundation for Pediatric and Infantile Glaucoma

The GL Foundation was established in 1998 by Dr. Alana Grajewski and Mr. Carlos Lyra. Dr. Grajewski is a board certified ophthalmologist and glaucoma specialist. Mr. Lyra is her patient who traveled from Brazil for emergency glaucoma surgery.

During the course of his treatment, Mr. Lyra became interested in the plight of babies and children with glaucoma. Upon his return to Brazil he became more aware of the difficulties facing children with glaucoma within Brazil as well as other areas of Central and South America.

Mr. Lyra's wife, Nancy, was born and raised in rural Indiana and knew from her own childhood experiences that in many parts of the United States, expert care may be both distant and beyond a family's resources. This lack of access to eye care for these children with glaucoma will result in blindness.

The struggle of families faced with a baby or child with a treatable eye condition unable to reach the sub-specialized care they need was the motivation to establish the Grajewski / Lyra Foundation for Pediatric & Infantile Glaucoma (The GL Foundation).
